LABORER
You help with things like demo, moving materials, and other work assisting as-needed. Great for summer/short-term work. You think of work like an opportunity to get some reps in, saving you from gym-time.
APPRENTICE
You believe you have a future in construction and are eager to learn. You are excited about being paired up with more experienced carpenters that you can work alongside as you learn the trade. You own one hammer and it’s too small.
CARPENTER
You have some experience working with wood in various job site scenarios, including rough framing. You’ve got your own tools and reliable transportation. You can run a miter saw, but don’t yet trust yourself to cut straight 90’s on a circular saw. It’s ok, bud… you’ll get there.
LEAD CARPENTER
You have extensive experience with both framing homes and trimming out homes. You know how to install cabinets and doors. You can lay flooring without having to think about it. You have your own truck. You own more tools than you tell your spouse about. You have at least four tape measures but you only know where two of them are at any given time. You’ve mastered the art of sharpening construction pencils.
SUPERINTENDENT
You can lead a crew of carpenters because you’ve been in the trade long enough to know what works and what doesn’t. You can run the day-to-day operations on a job site and work closely with the Project Manager to “get the rabbit up the tree” (and you don’t mind that people don’t know what that phrase means). You tell your spouse there is no need for her to remind you every 6 months about the home projects you’re in the middle of - you’ll get to them!
PROJECT MANAGER
You are able to think 15 steps ahead. At least that’s what you tell yourself. You have excellent customer service skills because you have spent years telling homeowners that, while the Pinterest photo they found and sent you at 2 AM would be an awesome upgrade, it will require the approval of a spendy change order. You can intuitively tell how many studs to order for a framing job, but you still check the numbers because you don’t want the hassle of going to the hardware store twice. You end up going to the hardware store twice anyway, but it’s ok, because hey, you’re the project manager.
